28: Tamoxifen

Wow, it's been over a month since I've written! I guess that's a good thing because it means I'm trying to focus on my life and whatever is next. Although I have to tell you that it's really odd seeing my bald self at the top of this page while I'm writing. It started to feel so natural to look that way but now that I have hair, it really does look odd doesn't it!

I visited my Oncologist a few weeks ago and all went just fine. He prescribed Tamoxifen, which is a powerful drug that helps to reduce the risk of the cancer coming back. It's very standard to prescribe this drug once patients are done with their treatments and can reduce recurrence by anywhere from 30 - 50%. It does have side effects and the last few weeks have been challenging, but I'm starting to feel better so hope the initial adjustment to my body is evening out. Side effects include hot flashes, mood swings and weight gain. YAY! And for some a feeling of illness while the body adjusts to it. I guess I had some adjusting to do because I've been feeling pretty lousy for a good couple of weeks. It also made me crampy and start to spot a little ... as if I was having a menstrual cycle (I haven't had one of those since May). Not a happy couple of weeks but it is getting much better.

I've got a few projects I'm getting ready to embark on and will share those once they are underway (I've just needed to focus on my health a bit lately so I can have good energy and focus).
